Getting Started
In order to Prepare for the class and the upcoming tax season I have added some important links. You will need to access the software in order to follow along in class and to complete your assignments. I would bookmark that page because you will use it A LOT!
PTIN
Anyone who prepares tax returns and charges a fee for their services is required to have a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) . There aren’t any educational requirements to get your PTIN. You can create one online on the IRS website. The process only takes about 15 minutes. The fee is $30.75. Because this is a yearly fee, I would register for this in November/December for the 2024 tax season.
EFIN
If you plan to file tax returns electronically, the IRS requires that you have an Electronic Filing Identification Number or EFIN . You will also need to provide your fingerprints to the IRS unless you are already a certified licensed professional, like a CPA or attorney. It should take about 45 days to get your EFIN. You will only need this is you plan to start your own tax firm. If you are planning to work for someone and EFIN is not needed at this time.
OCCC Registration (Owners of Tax Firms Must Apply)
The OCCC issues several licenses and registrations necessary for various consumer credit industries. The Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner maintains regulatory oversight of six categories of licensed industries and four categories of registered industries.
Licensed industries include those that are required to obtain operational licenses from the agency and that are subject to routine and periodic examination of records, processes, and compliance with statute and regulatory controls. Cost $50 per year. I would register for this in December.
